Ankle fusion: home essentials
Long NWB phase: scooter/crutches and cast care are central.
Home essentials
- Crutches or knee scooter for extended NWB
- Cast or boot per protocol
- Waterproof protection for hygiene
- Elevation setup for swelling control
Before surgery
- Prepare for weeks of NWB. Work and home logistics and set-up.
- Single-level living if stairs are unsafe
- Ask about fusion timeline and smoking cessation
- Discuss shoe expectations after fusion (rocker soles sometimes help)
Remember
- Cast sores, fever, or drainage: call your team
- Do not walk on the leg early “to see if it fused.” Imaging and your medical team decide.
