Ankle ORIF: home essentials

NWB plan: crutches or knee scooter plus cast/boot shower strategy.

Home essentials

  • Crutches or a knee scooter for true non-weight-bearing
  • Cast/boot as ordered (know when it may come off for hygiene)
  • Waterproof cast cover or sponge-bath plan
  • Ice and elevation station (toes above heart)

Before surgery

  • Practice NWB gait before discharge. Touching the toes down counts as weight unless specifically ordered for TDWB (touch down weight bearing).
  • Move bedroom to a single level if stairs are unsafe on crutches
  • Stock a shower stool and cast cover
  • Arrange rides; driving is often impossible while NWB on the right ankle

Remember

  • Toes that turn blue/cold/numb, or cast pain unrelieved by elevation: urgent care
  • Fever or drainage from incisions: call your surgeon
