ACDF cervical fusion: home essentials
Collar (if ordered), soft foods, and no heavy lifting.
Home essentials
- Cervical collar if prescribed. Know day/night rules
- Soft foods and protein shakes while swallowing is sore
- Ice for incision as directed
- Slip-on shoes and waist-height storage to avoid bending with a collar
Before surgery
- Practice collar donning before surgery if you will use one
- Stock yogurt, eggs, smoothies. Rough foods like dry toast can be difficult day two
- Move TV/reading to eye level to avoid prolonged neck flexion
- Arrange help; driving is often delayed while collared
Remember
- Trouble breathing, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or inability to swallow saliva: emergency care
- New arm weakness or hand dysfunction: call your surgeon urgently
