Bunionectomy: home essentials
Protective shoe and elevation. Swelling is part of the process.
Home essentials
- Surgical shoe or boot as prescribed
- Ice and elevation pillows for the foot
- Wide return-to-work shoes later (not fashionable narrow toes early)
- Cane if needed for balance in the stiff shoe
Before surgery
- Confirm heel-weight-bearing vs other gait pattern
- Buy groceries before surgery; minimize walking week one
- Prepare elevation station for TV/work time
- Ask when you may get the foot wet
Remember
- Toes overly pale/blue or escalating cast/shoe pressure pain: call
- Do not force the foot into regular dress shoes to “see if it fits” early
