Hip replacement: home essentials

Set up your home before surgery to protect your new joint.

Home essentials

  • Walker or cane per your surgeon's weight-bearing orders
  • Raised toilet seat or commode to limit deep hip flexion
  • Shower chair and grab bars for safe bathing
  • Ice supplies and long-handled dressing tools

Before surgery

  • Review hip precautions with your surgical team (no bending past 90°, no crossing legs)
  • Clear pathways for walker use; keep essentials at waist height
  • Order equipment so it arrives before surgery day
  • Arrange help with meals, pets, and rides for the first week home

Remember

  • Sudden leg shortening, severe pain, or inability to bear weight: contact your team
  • Follow your surgeon's hip precautions over any general checklist
