Knee replacement: home essentials

Order equipment 1–2 weeks before surgery when possible.

Home essentials

  • Walker or cane for safe weight-bearing
  • Raised toilet seat and shower chair for bathroom safety
  • Ice or cold therapy for swelling and pain control
  • Sock aid, reacher, and long-handled shoehorn if bending is limited

Before surgery

  • Remove loose rugs and cords; plan a single-level recovery space
  • Stock hydration, medications, and easy meals within reach
  • Arrange rides and help for the first several days home
  • Practice using your walker before discharge when possible

Remember

  • Fever or increasing redness at the incision: call your care team
  • Your surgeon's written protocol always takes priority over any checklist
