Lumbar laminectomy: home essentials

Walk often, sit less, avoid BLT. Set the house up before surgery day.

Home essentials

  • Supportive walking shoes and a clear flat walking loop at home
  • Walker or cane if balance feels unsteady after surgery
  • Raised toilet seat and shower chair to reduce deep bending
  • Ice packs for the incision area after activity
  • Slip-on shoes and waist-height storage for daily items

Before surgery

  • Clear rugs and clutter from your indoor walking route
  • Practice log-roll in and out of bed before surgery
  • Move toiletries, kitchen staples, and remotes to counter height
  • Arrange rides and help for the first few days at home
  • Ask about smoking cessation — it supports healing after spine surgery

Remember

  • New leg weakness, bowel/bladder changes, or saddle numbness: emergency care
  • Fever, increasing redness, or wound drainage: call your surgical team
  • Do not start YouTube or gym core workouts until your surgeon and PT clear them
  • Feeling better early does not mean vacuuming, yardwork, or lifting are cleared
