Lumbar fusion (PLIF/TLIF): home essentials
Longer restrictions than discectomy. Brace and waist-height living.
Home essentials
- Lumbar brace if prescribed (know when to wear it)
- Walker for early balance
- Raised toilet seat and shower chair
- Waist-height storage for the whole recovery arc
Before surgery
- Stop smoking. Fusion healing is highly smoking-sensitive
- Practice log-roll and brace donning before surgery if possible
- Arrange more help than for a simple decompression
- Ask about bone graft / BMP instructions unique to your case
Remember
- New weakness, bowel/bladder loss, or calf pain with swelling: urgent care
- Do not lift “just this once”. Fusion failure risk is real early on
