Rotator cuff repair: home essentials

Plan for one-handed daily tasks while your arm is in a sling.

Home essentials

  • Sling worn per your surgeon's schedule (often full-time early on)
  • Ice for pain and swelling. Protect the skin with a cloth barrier
  • Pillows or wedge for propped/reclined sleep
  • Button-up shirts and elastic-waist pants for easy dressing

Before surgery

  • Practice one-handed hygiene and meal prep before surgery
  • Place frequently used items at counter height
  • Fill pain medication and stool softener prescriptions early
  • Review sling rules (when to wear, shower instructions) with your team

Remember

  • Do not lift, reach, or actively move the surgical arm unless PT instructs you
  • Fever or spreading redness at the incision: contact your surgeon
