Patellar / quad tendon repair: home essentials

Brace locked straight early. Protect active extension. Ask before you bend more.

Home essentials

  • Hinged knee brace that can lock in full extension (as prescribed)
  • Crutches for protected weight-bearing and balance
  • Ice and elevation setup that works with a long brace
  • Firm chair and raised toilet seat — straight-leg braces make sit-to-stand hard
  • Shower strategy that keeps the incision and brace lining dry

Before surgery

  • Get brace lock, sleep rules, and weight-bearing status in writing
  • Practice safe transfers without unlocking the brace early
  • Clear walkways and move daily items to avoid deep squatting
  • Schedule PT when your surgeon says it is time — do not invent a home ROM program
  • Ask about clotting prevention, wound care, and when showers are allowed

Remember

  • Fever, intense calf pain, uncontrolled pain, or heavy wound drainage: call your surgical team
  • Sudden loss of the ability to keep the knee straight or a new “give way”: urgent contact
  • Do not unlock the brace, force knee bend, or start active kicking exercises until cleared
  • Online squat / lunge / leg-extension workouts can overload a fresh repair — wait for PT
